Despite the explicit ban imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), laser pointers were reportedly utilized during the inaugural match between Morocco and Comoros. The main target of these lasers appeared to be Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the match official was repeatedly subjected to lasers, particularly at critical junctures such as during the VAR review process and while issuing a penalty in favor of Morocco.
This incident has been characterized as “disgraceful” for the opening event of the tournament. Merely days prior, CAF President Patrice Motsepe had pledged to implement a stringent “zero tolerance” policy; however, it is evident that security measures were inadequate in preventing these devices from entering the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
